Build larger flocs. Improve separation.

Polyelectrolytes are water-treatment polymers used as flocculants or coagulation aids. An appropriate product can bridge or charge-condition fine suspended particles so they form larger flocs, supporting clarification, sedimentation, filtration, sludge thickening and dewatering. Selection is specific to wastewater chemistry, solids and treatment equipment.

Selection parameters

Performance depends on ionic charge, molecular weight, charge density, product form, make-down concentration, ageing, mixing energy and dose.

Share your wastewater type, solids characteristics, current coagulant, treatment objective and equipment so candidate grades can be evaluated through testing.

Available types

Select by water chemistry and treatment objective.

Anionic

Commonly evaluated for inorganic or mineral suspended solids, clarification, industrial wastewater and selected process streams.

Cationic

Commonly evaluated for organic sludge conditioning, thickening, filter presses and centrifuge dewatering.

Non-Ionic

Evaluated for selected low-charge water-treatment and industrial separation duties.

ETP

Supports floc growth, settling and separation of suspended contaminants in industrial effluent treatment.

STP

Selected grades support sludge thickening, conditioning and dewatering in sewage-treatment plants.

Dewatering

Used with filter presses, belt presses, screw presses and centrifuges after grade and dose qualification.

Use with PAC

Primary coagulation plus polymer flocculation.

In suitable water and wastewater systems, Poly Aluminium Chloride can act as the primary coagulant while a selected Polyelectrolyte acts as the flocculant or coagulant aid. Correct chemical order, injection points, mixing and dose can improve floc formation and solid-liquid separation.

No universal dosage

Use raw-water or wastewater analysis, jar testing, qualified pilot work or controlled plant trials. Overdosing or choosing the wrong ionic grade can reduce performance or destabilize the treatment process.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wetting, make-down concentration, ageing time, dilution, feed-pump selection and mixing shear.

Safety and handling

Prepared solutions are extremely slippery.

Avoid inhaling polymer dust and prevent unnecessary skin and eye contact. Exact chemistry and hazards vary by ionic grade, molecular weight, product form and manufacturer.

  • Contain and clean spills promptly using an established procedure; hydrated polymer can create a severe slip hazard and can be difficult to remove.
  • Use suitable dust control, ventilation and task-appropriate PPE during bag opening and solution preparation.
  • Store unopened product cool and dry, protected from moisture, contamination and incompatible materials.
  • Use only the grade-specific make-down, ageing and dosing procedure to avoid poor dissolution and loss of performance.
  • Consult the current manufacturer TDS, SDS and batch COA before storage, preparation, use, spill response or disposal.
